Why you need a marketing agency to build you a marketing led website.

Why you need a marketing agency to build you a marketing led website.

With so many different companies offering website development it is difficult to now what the difference is and which option you should go for.  For some the decision is simple: “The cheapest” but is this actually the correct option when this could be losing you ‘000’s of pounds? Compared to the turnover you want your new website to make what is cheap and how much investment should you be making? First lets look at some of the options available to the average business person looking for a new website:

Hosting Companies:

The adverts for hosting companies offering you the ability to “build your own site for free” seem to be everywhere at the moment and the aftermath of this is something we get called about more and more often.  Business owners spend hours & hours creating their own website, put it online and then wonder why they haven’t had any calls.  They then call us to request our free 37 point website review to try and get to the bottom of the problem.  Often the response of the review is always the same:

  • Inconsistent or poor design
  • No or very little SEO
  • No or weak  Calls to Action
  • Poor technical capabilities
  • No plan
  • Lack of visible investment

In short the site looks like it hasn’t been invested and doesn’t work, so why would your customers invest in you if you don’t have a credible online presence and look like you’ve under invested in what you are selling or offering?  The fact is unless you are very up to date on websites; how they work and need to be built, you wouldn’t know any differently; but you should’t be expected to – you are an expert in your business not in website development! (And if your business is website development – why are you building using the limited software that is free from a hosting company?!) You also have to ask yourself how much will I really be saving if I take my time costs into account, not only am I using up my time building this site but more importantly I’m not out selling / providing my product.

Designers:

Designers are the next option when looking to build a website and they can create beautiful websites that look and show your product at its best.  They often charge by the hour for time spent working on your design so the price can vary depending on the size of your site.  More often than not though the websites they create still lack some of the fundamentally crucial factors that must be included in a website:

  • Website design created more for the design less your business
  • No or very little SEO
  • No or weak  Calls to Action
  • Poor technical capabilities
  • No website plan

So the site now looks great but its still not converting so are you any better off than you would have been using the free service below?  No because your site is still wrong, this may be because the designer doesn’t have the experience to know what needs to be done or doesn’t want to change the design to include them (we had experience of both!)

Developers:

Now developers generally have the technically knowledge to make sure your site works and has all the capabilities it needs to be found online; so is this the answer? Most of the time: no as they still miss out some of the critical elements of a website.  They also tend to charge for hours coding and therefore by the amount of pages your site has (this is a outdated way charging as lots of Content Management Software systems make it very easy to add as many pages as you need, so don’t need to be individually coded.):

  • Inconsistent or poor design
  • No or weak  Calls to Action
  • No plan
  • Lack of visible investment
  • Not easily transferable

The are generally focused on the technical build so create a website without or with a very subjective design with no or very few calls to action. This means a large proportion of customers, even though they can now find you online will still be put off and choose a competitor over you.

The above descriptions are generalised and there are some designers and developers who break the trend but how do you, as the customer find these gems and then make it work for you?  How do you know what makes a good website?  Well there is another option to help ensure you get it right..

Marketing Agencies:

Marketing agencies have access to expert and tested developers and designers so can produce beautiful and technically superior websites but the main advantage and reason for using a marketing agency starts before they are even brought into the picture.

A marketing agency is the only one that has the experience or expertise to look at your business, customers and target market and break out the key areas that must be developed on the site.  They can then create a plan of your site which is passed to the designers and developers (whilst constantly reviewed and project managed by them) so they can create a beautiful and technically up to date website that converts customers and works for your business.

So whilst designers and developers are important when creating a new website for you business, the only people fully qualified to bring all the aspects together and create a site build with conversion in mind is a marketing agency.
