As we get into the New Year proper we wanted to start a series of articles focusing on the essential Marketing that businesses need to carry out if they are to achieve their objectives and grow. We hope this will be of value to our SME clients and the many companies and businesses that have connected with us via our increasingly successful Directories a network that will be expanding and improving constantly.
To commence with we’ll take stock of where a company might sit in terms of investment in Marketing activity. Of course SMEs tend to be very sales focused when it comes to Marketing but companies with a turnover below 5-10million tend not to have dedicated marketing personnel. Apart from the risk to your quality of Marketing, from lack of expertise, this means there is likely to be under investment in the thinking and planning side of the marketing process. It’s not sufficient to pay a web agency for a new website and say “we’re doing our Marketing”. The website must be active in the Marketplace if it is to deliver on its potential as your 24/7 business development agent. How will this happen? Who will devise the strategies, execute them and modify them as they develop? With no internal resource this simply will not get done adequately.
Companies have to take a good look at themselves and if they don’t see any resource then you can rest assured the Marketing that is being done is extremely limited at best. the options of course are twofold either hire some new internal resource or hire an agency to supply a support service. In cost terms the external resource is the best option but there needs to be clear direction, scope of work and reporting if it’s to result in a trustful partnership and achieve the desired results. Look out for our future blogs that will deal with these elements.
